Garrett Chip Install Page 6
There are two types of chips used in different ECUs.
This is a picture of an ECU with a "PLCC" chip. These are always in sockets.
Other ECUs use "DIP" chips. Some DIP chips are socketed, some are soldered directly to the board. DIP Chip pictures will be coming to the next page soon.
If you have a PLCC chip, it is most easily removed from its socket using a special tool called a PLCC Puller which looks like this:
In the US, these are readily available at Radio Shack. In Europe, you should be able to find one of these at just about any Electronics store. If you ask, we will inlcude one with your chip order for an additional 10.- USD (which is what they cost at Radio Shack).
The puller is insterted into the corners of the PLCC socket like this:
It needs to be pushed down as far as it can, then squeeze the legs together. This should easily pop the chip out of its socket.
You can simply push the new chip into the socket using your thumb, but do it carefully and pay special attention that Pin 1 of the new chip ends up in the same place that Pin 1 of the old chip was. [another picture showing pin 1 coming soon]
